As far as Instagram influencers go, Lil Miquela might not seem all that unique at first glance. More than 1 million people follow the teenager’s feed as she regularly shares stories about her life and shows off her stylish wardrobe. Miquela isn’t real, though, and not just in the “nothing is real on Instagram” sense: she is a computer-generated creation made by a Los Angeles startup. While that might seem bizarre at first, CGI influencers like Miquela give us a glimpse into what the future of social media marketing could look like.

Questions:

  1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a computer-generated avatar like Lil Miquela for social media marketing?
  2. Do you think computer-generated influencers like Lil Miquela could be the future of social media marketing? Why or why not?

  • 1) The advantages of using a computer generated avatar like Lil Miquela for social media marketing are being able to control the avatars every move and not having to worry about the avatar making a wrong decision which could hurt their publicity because they are not a human being. The disadvantages would be, the clients not approving of a computer generated avatar which could lead to a decrease in popularity or business.

    2) I think, computer generated influencers like Lil Miquela could be the future of social media marketing. Without them having any flaws to be frowned upon many people would probably fall in love with and look up to them, wanting to be just like them. On the other hand, it could be a failure because some people might not feel comfortable seeing avatars as influencers.
